Excerpt taken from a report I'd prepared for the Australian peak scientific organisation, CSIRO, on the international performance bodywear market in
1998.
A small Scottish outdoor company who made their name supplying pile/fleece garments to oil rig worker and fisherman in the North Sea. They have been
promoting their Rhovyl underwear for more than ten years. One of the few to continue with this fabric in the outdoor market in the UK, which has been so
well received in Europe. It had a soft brushed knit, which was more comfortable than the thin rib Lifa from Helly Hansen of Norway. Rhovyl is from Rhone
-Poulenc which is a Chlorofibre or vinyl based fibre. Rhovyl Up is the latest version and is said to be a high wicking fabric which also traps warm air next
to the skin. Garments are said to have a soft natural feel, an anti-bacterial treatment to prevent odour retention and are machine washable at 40ºC. In
the past Chlorofibre garments were well known for their stink and for their shrink ( after hot washing or drying.) In recent years North Cape have added
Coolmax and ThermaStat to their line. Coolmax is suggested for summer and high aerobic pursuits, Rhovyl Up for climbing and 3 season use with the
ThermaStat for winter hill walking.
North Cape also sells outside the UK to Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hong
Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan.
